Nurses need to look Professional

by Maternity Scrubs on April 28, 2010

Being a nurse requires the ability to perform very physical work. While some tasks are easy to do, others require much more from a nurse and her outfit. Nurses have to lean over patients, lift patients, take their blood pressure, administer an IV, assist during long surgeries and much much more. That is part of being a nurse.

But no matter what your tasks as a nurse are, one critical piece is to look and act professional. No matter who you work for, you are representing the hospital or medical office and of course yourself. If you do not look or act professional, your patients will not have much trust in your work and the same might apply to your supervisor. As you can tell, looking like a competent and qualified nurse is really essential.

There are many things that can make or break that professional look of yours. Here the Top 3 tips on how to maintain that professional impression and look as a nurse.

The Cleavage
V-Neck Scrubs are often the preferred tops for nurses. They make you look good in most cases, but if you know you have to do a lot of physical work with leaning over patients, some patients might not feel that comfortable – especially if you are little busty. In those cases stick to regular scrubs. For male nurses the same advice applies, but for other reasons.  If you are not wearing a T-Shirt under your scrubs a V-Neck scrub should not be your first choice – especially if you have a hairy chest.

Stain Master
Stained scrubs are like a cheap business card. We all know that certain fluids leave stains that eventually will not come off no matter how thoroughly the scrubs are cleaned and washed.  These irremovable stains are for one not hygienic and they do not make you look professional. They can also undermine the trust relationship with a patient. Read about the latest virus or bacteria incident from a hospital? Patients read those stories, too and they want to feel safe at a hospital or doctors office. A clean and sanitized environment is key to gain that trust and it starts with your medical scrubs, too.

The Sausage
Are your scrubs getting a little tight around the waist (and other body parts)? A gain in weight usually happens slowly and we do not notice at first unless we use a scale frequently to take note of our weight. It might be time to either go on a diet and to work out or to buy new sets of scrubs that provide you with more room. Wearing tight clothes is uncomfortable for sure when working as a nurse. However, it also does not look very nice if an overweight person wears clothes that are not made for the body weight they are carrying. While some think big is beautiful, it is definitely not in those cases. Buy proper clothes, but preferably live a healthier life. Since you are a nurse it also reflects your understanding of the field you work in, if you are healthy and look healthy and reflect a healthy life style.

Conclusion: In some (many) jobs it is necessary to look professional to be successful and to gain the trust of your customers. As a nurse patients are your customers and it is important that a patient trusts you and that you have the ability to do the work you are supposed to do. Working in a health related profession does not leave much room for second chances. People want to trust you. If you send them a different message due to the clothes (medical scrubs) you are wearing, you are putting that trust at risk.
