Should a pregnant nurse work the night shift at all. I saw a posting on a forum where a nurse was asking for advice. She was worries about working “on the floor” when her tummy would show that she is expecting. She had nobody to ask for advice because where she worked, she had not had a pregnant co-worker doing the nightshift. One peer immediately switched to day shift when she found out she was pregnant. She was also concerned about getting enough rest during pregnancy and to be able to perform all the tasks that come with being a nurse. So, the question if a pregnant nurse should work nightshift was a tough one to answer.
Quite a few nurses answered her questions and the overall response was that “you will be fine” working the night shift as a pregnant nurse. Other nurses reported from their work places that everyone pitched in and helped. Pregnant nurses in their work environments could definitely count on the co-workers to assist with heavy lifting or to keep her away from super-sick patients. Being a nurse and working in such an environment is almost like family. You can count on the support of your peers and if not you would be pregnant, but another nurse you would do the same for her, too.
Often there is an initial fear when being pregnant as a nurse. But you will be surprised how things turn out once a) your peers know about it and b) when you get into the second and third trimester. Many nurses pretty much work until a week or two before the delivery date.
